Но лекарство оказалось вреднее болезни. Удар был нанесен по всем составным частям режиссуры. Работа без подготовки и разработки сценария станет причиной аморфности сюжетов (сюжет На последнем дыхании почти лишен жизни). Постоянные натурные съемки постепенно сведут на нет студийную жизнь. «Репортажная» манера съемок остановит - на время - все поиски и открытия в операторском искусстве. Единственным подлинно новаторским достижением можно назвать рождение новой звезды: Жан-Поля Бельмондо. В дальнейшем, без усилий чередуя авторский кинематограф с «коммерческим», ломая все привычные устои и клише, этот артист подготовит почву для появления нового типа разностороннего актера, образцом которого в наши дни является Жерар Депардье.
